Gotta keep busy during lock down, so I dragged Alex into shooting a comedy sketch, and my friend Theresa helped virtually. I don’t do impressions, so I can’t say my Mnuchin is spot on, but my Mark Meadows is so uncanny it’s freaking me out.
When I’m a little kid I just want to tell funny stories like my Uncle Andy. He’s the one in the middle of the picture — below my mom and above Aunt Mika — with his tongue out. You know someone like him. The whole space brightens when he...

At David Lawson’s Astoria Bookshop Storytelling Show the other day, I told a story about setting a toilet on fire in middle school. And just as I paint a picture of sitting in the principal’s office, I blank. Completely. It’s almost like I forget I’m telling a story. I’m just looking out at the people in the chairs. I start to see the concern in their faces.
When you get to play an angel and a devil, that’s a pretty good Christmas. Marie Hasenpflug’s production of the Lux Soap radio play in LaGrangeville, New York, performed to two sold-out audiences and it was a delight to be part of it. I played...

Weird things happen when you perform, like you write a solo comedy show and someone who sees it books you as a singer/guitarist. This event looks really fun and the other performers look super talented and interesting. Amanda Miller is the host (she's been hosting this for five years now) and she and I will both have our shows at Pittsburgh Fringe next month.
“Because attending the Fringe Festival is so much like unearthing buried treasure, it’s important to have a few shows in particular to orbit your Fringe experience around. Xela Batchelder, Pittsburgh Fringe’s executive director, had a few suggestions for me when I had the opportunity to...

"Here Lies Joe is a successful character driven story which creates the narrative via those characters. It's not a rich tapestry of characterization, which would be defeating, but elemental, providing just enough to move the story along and provide the viewer with a connection. "I give it a full 5 Daggers, both for being the wonderful film it is and giving me so much to talk about; now that's the definition of film." Full review»
I serve on the board of directors of Spark Media Project, which teaches media arts to underserved youth and gives them a forum to create film, television, radio, VR and more. Very excited to repost their recent success from the Tribeca Film Institute: Spark Media Project's "Santa Woman" was selected from hundreds of submissions from across the country as one of the top five finalists in the Tribeca Film Institute's "The America I Am" Competition, which recognizes young filmmakers "that express unique perspectives on the American experience." The film was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival red carpet premiere at Ellis Island on April 19th, 2017.

This past Sunday I took part in a reading of MB in White Plains before a crowd of about 150 or so. The play is a hip hop musical, a modern retelling of the Moses story in the context of the intersection of corporate America and hip hop culture. It's a compelling modern slavery tale, and I feel privileged to have played a part in it.

As a performing artist your greatest hope is that you will reach your audience in a meaningful way, sharing something with them about what it's like to be human and trying to find our way through life. This note was passed along to Here Lies Joe's director Mark Battle at the Draft Film Festival last week. As Mark said, "This is better than any award could ever be."
"The chemistry between Temple and Morrow is off the chart. The duo play meet cute in an oddly effective way given the subject matter--Some Hollywood produced rom-coms have less of that key element with a two hour narrative than "Joe" has within its format." Read the full review here »

Sometimes you luck out and someone drops a great role in your lap. Bootsie is that kind of role, a magical British Latin teacher who’s daily routine includes interruptions by ghosts. Director Courtney Laine Self invited me to play the part in Helen Banner’s play in progress “1989 and Hot” as part of Everyday Inferno Theatre Company’s 2016 Development Lab which culminated at the Access Theater last Saturday, and working alongside talented actors Meghann Garmany, Julia Christgau, and Rudi Utter was a real joy. "Here Lies Joe is a touching film which carries the perfect balance of drama and humour. The performances from Temple and Morrow brilliantly convey the way people approach and respond to the matter of suicide, and Battle has produced an emotional short film that is indie filmmaking at its best." "Dean Temple was brilliant as Joe, a man ‘in transition’ and clearly down-on-his-luck, looking to end it all. Temple captures Joe perfectly from his darkest points all the way through to his acceptance of a friendship with ‘Z’. Andi Morrow matches Temple step for step with an enigmatic performance as ‘Z’. Morrow captures this seemingly free-spirit and plays it to the full bouncing off whoever she gets to interact with. It is a pleasure to watch Morrow and Temple interact as the have excellent chemistry on screen." I'm overwhelmed by the reception for this film, and so proud to have worked with such a talented cast and crew. Read the entire review »
By Andrew Buckner "From the opening moments of director Mark Battle and Sweven Films’ hauntingly beautiful twenty-three minute short, “Here Lies Joe”, a riveting tonal balance of melancholy, peppered with effective humor and an ebbing sense of optimism, is brilliantly established. We watch our lead, whose name is referenced in the title of the piece (rivetingly played by Dean Temple in a performance that is always watchable, absolutely perfect for the material and showcases his incredible abilities by speaking volumes through frequently sorrowful facial gestures) taping up the windows of his beat-up car, full of books and family photographs, in an attempt at ending his life. This sequence lasts but a minute. Regardless, it immediately pulls us into Joe’s world. This early bit is so triumphant at doing so that we instantly care for and desperately want to learn more about this lonely soul." Read the nice things he said about the other people in the movie»
"Battle’s lovely film is crafted beautifully in every frame and it is bolstered by a stellar cast across-the-board, led by Temple’s Joe, who is a study in subtlety and stillness. At the films’ close, Joe is becoming a man who is opening his eyes to the world for the first time in a long time and in Temple’s eyes, you see hope and a sense of peace that has long been missing. Andi Morrow’s spectacular Z, a marvelous, fully realized characterization that brims with humor, anger and warmth, matches Temple beat for beat throughout." Read full review on MQM»
