Here Lies Joe wins Outstanding Short Drama at the 2017 Draft Film Festival

Here Lies Joe wins Outstanding Short Drama

The 2017 Draft Film Festival in Derry, New Hampshire gave Here Lies Joe its Outstanding Short Drama Award last week. So in addition to the beautiful letter from a mother posted in a previous blog entry, Mark Battle brings home an award. I love the cast and crew of this film.…

A thank you note from a mother for Here Lies Joe

As a performing artist your greatest hope is that you will reach your audience in a meaningful way, sharing something with them about what it’s like to be human and trying to find our way through life. This note was passed along to Here Lies Joe’s director Mark Battle at the Draft Film Festival last week. As Mark said, “This is better than any award could ever be.”…

March 9 comedy monologue at People’s Improv Theater

I’ve been working on a solo show I plan to take to Edinburgh Fringe in summer 2018. While I had a rough draft written, I wanted something to help me start whipping it into performance shape. Enter Peter Michael Marino’s class Flying Solo at the PIT-NYC. Peter has a pretty amazing understanding of both solo performance and comedy – his work has included several shows he’s taken to Edinburgh and beyond, as well as a musical that opened in the West End – and it’s been a terrific experience working with him. I’ve made a living as a writer for a long time, but it always amazes me how much more I have to learn. Peter is a great teacher. My writing has changed.

Our class show is this Thursday at 8:30 (tickets available here) and I’ll be premiering my first theatrical monologue.…

Who Killed Jane Doe? starring Dean Temple

Guest Starring on “Who Killed Jane Doe?” on March 14, 2017

I will appear in “The Girl in the Gulf” – Amy Rose Hurst case (episode 101) on March 14 on Investigation Discovery at 10pm as Dock Detective. I had a blast shooting this in Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay, even though they dressed me in tweed in August (they kindly held a fan to my face and an umbrella over my head when I was off camera). Thank you Thea Washington for casting me in this.…

The Upstarts, read by Dean Temple for Hachette Audio

Bestselling “The Upstarts” is Amazon’s Pick for Best Nonfiction for February

At the time of writing, The Upstarts audio book is number 9 on Amazon’s bestseller list for Technology and Business books. Hachette let me know that they sold 1,000 copies of the audiobook in the first week. They also let me know that’s an extremely impressive number. It’s early days still, but with 87 ratings on Audible, I have a 4.7/5 star performance rating. So far, my experience with narrating audiobooks is pretty awesome.…

The Ambulance Drivers, read by Dean Temple for Hachette Audio

That’s a wrap for The Ambulance Drivers

Just finished recording an interesting and insightful – and incredibly well researched – new book by New York Times’ bestselling author James McGrath Morris about the friendship between Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos, two radically different personalities with very different views of the world and the effects that had on both their writing and their relationship. It’s wonderful to work again with producer/director Lisa Cahn and sound engineer/director James Zoutis (worked on The Upstarts with them as well). Look for it in late spring.…

Here Lies Joe in Chattanooga Film Festival

View from Hachette Studio

View from the studio

My view as we start in on the Ambulance Drivers, about the friendship that developed between Hemingway and Dos Passos following their stints driving ambulances in World War II. It’s an incredibly well researched, very readable work by New York Times’ bestseller James McGrath Morris that follows their early struggles defining their writing styles to represent a new generation, and how their experiences, both at war and in their personal lives, informed what they did. An interesting historic read for anyone really, assuming they do read, but interesting in particular for artists. They failed and failed again but kept working until they succeeded. …

Jimmy Page’s Bron Y Ur, but on my guitar

I used to record on my guitar a lot, but then, like with acting, I stopped for a long time for no good reason. Here’s the first one I’ve done in a while. It was done in one take, and no, my time keeping ain’t so good when I’m solo.

Dean Temple reading The Upstarts by Brad Stone

Narrating Brad Stone’s The Upstarts for Hachette Audio

I wrapped yesterday on The Upstarts by New York Times bestselling author Brad Stone (The Everything Store), directed and produced by Lisa Cahn for Hachette Audio, read by me. It’s the story of the rise of AirBnB, Uber and the sharing economy (as well as a couple of multi billionaires). Comes out in January 2017, and I’ll post when the audio book becomes available.…
